Surgical Orthodontics Jackson MS

Sandifer Orthodontics

Surgical orthodontic treatment — or orthognathic surgery — is a combination of orthodontic treatment and jaw surgery to make major corrections to problems such as: malocclusions (incorrect bites) caused by jaw bone abnormalities. These surgeries can involve corrections to the jaws and facial structures. If it turns out that you will need surgical orthodontics, Dr. Sandifer will work with an oral & maxillofacial surgeon to ensure that you get the results that you want and the best possible all-around care.

How Do I Know That I Need Surgical Orthodontics?

Surgical orthodontics are usually needed for treating patients that have improper bites and facial asymmetries. The need for this type of correction occurs when there exists a major issue — the patient’s jaws do not line up or orthodontic treatment is not able to resolve a bite issue. By aligning the jaw, orthognathic surgery will allow us to move the patient’s teeth into the correct position.

You will know for sure that you need orthognathic surgery as part of your treatment once Dr. Sandifer has conducted an in-depth examination. The severity of your case and the alignment of your jaw will determine whether you need surgery or not.

What you need to know about your potential orthognathic surgery is that it is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and that the surgery will take place in a hospital environment. Depending on the case, this type of surgery can take several hours and, in accordance with the severity of the surgery, recovery might last from a week to three weeks. Keep in mind that orthognathic surgery is a major intervention and that you will need to schedule time off from your daily activities to be able to fully recover.

Once your jaw has healed and you conduct a follow-up with your orthodontist, you will probably be advised to wear rubber bands to make the last adjustments to your bite. Much time should not remain as surgery is usually done prior to finishing braces. Braces usually are removed as early as 4-6 months after surgery.
