Oral Hygiene

Dr. Sandifer strongly recommends that each and every one of her patients maintain their recalls and dental cleanings/check-ups with their general dentist. Each patient is thoroughly educated on how to clean all teeth and appliances to maintain a healthy plan of treatment.

Retention

When your orthodontic treatment is complete, Dr. Sandifer will recommend the best type of retainers for you. They could be one or a combination of the following:
  1. Bonded Retainers – These retainers are bonded with a clear adhesive behind the teeth. Diligent hygiene and flossing are essential in keeping these retainers clean. These are indicated for patients that had severe crowding or spacing in the upper and/or lower teeth.
  2. Removable Retainers
    1. Clear Essix Overlays – These are clear retainers that fit over the teeth like a glove. These do not interfere with enunciation as much as the Hawley/Wraparound style retainers, but they are more prone to replacement every few years due to common wear and tear.
    2. Hawley/Wraparound Style Retainers – These are retainers that have been around for a while and have a very good track record, when worn. These hold up better than the Essix style, but they do require a compliant patient. There is more of an adjustment period when it comes to enunciating, but they are a reliable and rigid retainer.
No matter what style, a retainer must be worn to retain your beautiful smile. Dr. Sandifer prescribes anywhere from 8 weeks to 4 months full time wear after braces are removed, followed by night-time wear. At the retention dismissal visit, Dr. Sandifer will remind each patient to continue night-time wear for as long as they want their teeth to stay straight.
